Anchor tattoo on the inner wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a man's hands as he adjusts a white shirt cuff, with a silver wristwatch on one wrist. A small solid black anchor sits on the inner wrist of the other hand, with simple, bold outlines and flat black fill. The soft focus and shallow depth of field keep the tattoo and the cuff as the main points of interest against a dark background.

The ferry was cancelled for the third morning running, and Ewan Pryce had already counted the tins in the chandlery twice. Out past the breakwater the Maid of Scarra rode at her mooring, bow turned towards the mainland as though she could will herself across. Ewan had signed on at seventeen and never once been sick, which his father said was the only honest thing about him.

On Thursday his aunt Bet came in from the post office with a parcel for the lifeboat crew and a question she had clearly been carrying since breakfast. "Did you ever find out who painted the anchor on the slipway?" It had appeared overnight, a black shape as wide as a man's arm, bold and flat, drawn in tar on the grey stone where the old mooring rings had rusted through. Nobody on Scarra admitted to it. The schoolmaster thought it was a dare. The minister thought it was a sign of something he declined to name.
Ewan went down at low tide with a bucket of turps and a rag, meaning to scrub it clean, and found his hand stopping on the first curve. Beneath the tar someone had cut a name into the stone with a chisel: Morag, and the year her boat went down. He sat on the slipway until the tide came back over his boots. Then he left the shape where it was.
On Friday the Maid sailed, the fog lifting off the bay like a cloth drawn from a table. Ewan stood at the rail and watched the anchor on the slipway shrink to a dark mark against the grey, holding fast to the bottom of the bay the way it always had, while the boat finally went where she was meant to go.
