Tattooed legs in an inverted yoga pose on a mat

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A woman with red hair in a bun balances upside down in a yoga pose with her head on a purple mat and her legs raised. Her legs and thigh carry large, multicoloured tattoos that include roses, a fruit motif and smaller linework, with bold red, green and orange ink. The composition shows a bright room with a window to the left and a patterned rug below.

Dear Walter, the rose by the coal shed has come out red as a poker left in the grate, and Mrs Pringle says it's the wrong month for it, so you know it's been stubborn on purpose, same as you. The tin you posted from Durham arrived with its lid dented and the peaches still swimming in their syrup. I ate two standing at the sink and cried into the tea towel, which I'll not pretend was about the fruit.

The lodge has asked for a banner for the gala. Dougie Hall wanted the usual crossed picks and a lamp, but I told him the men have been staring at lamps for two hundred years and could do with something to look at in the daylight. So I've been working on the kitchen table with the red I saved from the dye works, the orange from Mam's old candle ends, and a green that Hilda swore was off a bottle of Dettol. The rose is the one from your sketchbook, the one you drew on the back of the rent book the week before you went down the first time. The peaches are my own idea. I thought a man who has been underground since he was fifteen might want a bit of something sweet in the bright air.

It will hang on the chapel railings on Saturday, and I'll be standing under it when the band comes round the corner, wondering whether you'll be on the bus back in time to see it. If the shift runs over, that's all right. Paint doesn't go off, and neither do the peaches if I keep the tin on the windowsill where the sun won't reach it.

Come up when you can, and bring the lamp you left on the bench.

Your Nell
