Tattooing a small geometric line design on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A tattooist with an orange tattoo machine works on the inner wrist of another person, adding a small black geometric motif built from thin straight lines. Beside the arm, a sketchbook shows similar angular line drawings, and a loose sheet holds a tattoo needle cartridge and a tool. The image is a bright, mostly white and grey setting, with the fine black linework as the main focus.

The drawing book came to me in a biscuit tin, and the first page I opened was a joke at somebody's expense. Grandad had scored a single hinge onto the paper and written beneath it in pencil gone silver: 'Doesn't fold without a reason.' I thought everything he wrote was about the greenhouse.

The greenhouse at Holme Lane had leaned for as long as anyone could remember, its panes held in by putty and stubbornness. He drew every bracket twice, once as it was and once as it should be, and the two versions never agreed. I spent a wet March copying them out at the kitchen table, the ruler slipping on the oilcloth, until my hand learned the angle his had known by heart.
When the glass came down in the autumn gale, I found the last sheet pinned under a flowerpot in the potting shed. It was the motif I'd been drawing all spring: three strokes meeting at a point that wasn't quite a point, a small arrow turned back on itself. Under it he had written only 'for the part that takes the weight, when you're ready.'
So I carried the sheet to a shop in Hebden Bridge, where a woman with a steady hand and no patience for fuss put it on the inside of my wrist in twenty minutes. She asked whether I wanted it straight. I told her he'd have wanted it a touch out, the way the greenhouse was. She laughed, set the needle down and measured again.
