Fine line sprig tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A close view of a woman's forearm showing a small sprig tattoo with a long thin stem and a cluster of small leaves or buds near the lower end. The linework is fine and even, rendered in a single blue ink with no shading. The background is softly out of focus, showing potted plants and a shelf, and the subject's face is not visible.

The ferry is late again, and the harbour wall at Sgeir Dubh is slick with the kind of drizzle that never quite becomes rain. You keep the cutting in a jam jar wrapped in wet newspaper, inside your coat, close to the warm side of you. Old Ailsa at the shop gave it to you with a look that said she had given away too many of these already. Heath that grows only on the north cliffs does not travel well, she said. It sulks. It wants the wind in its face and salt in the soil, and it will not forgive you for taking it off the rock.

The boat comes in grey and low, its engine coughing like a man with a bad chest. You stand at the rail with the jar cupped in both hands while the island shrinks behind the spray, a smudge of green and then nothing. Somewhere past the halfway mark a gull lands on the gunwale and watches the jar with great interest. You turn your back on it and count the stems through the glass. Seven. Eight, if you squint at the bottom end, where a single bud is still closed tight as a fist.
In the boarding house in Oban, the landlady has a windowsill full of geraniums and no patience for anything that isn't a geranium. You set the jar on the sill anyway, because the light is good there. Three mornings later the bud has opened, the colour of a tired sky, and the stem leans toward the glass as if it has been listening for the sea. You sit on the edge of the bed and watch it, and you do not yet know whether you have brought the island with you or only left it somewhere else.
