A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The barge pulls at its ropes all night when the wind comes down the cut, and by four you are already up in your socks on the cold planks, checking each line the way Uncle Harry taught you. He said a narrowboat was a bull that never tired. It leaned into the bank and wanted to be going, and the only trick was knowing when to let it have its head and when to hold it.

The bull on the cabin side was your aunt's work, done with a sign-painter's brush and a tin of black enamel in the winter the lock was being rebuilt and nobody could move. The horns curled up past the window frame. Beneath them she painted a scroll with TAURUS across it, because she was born in May and would not let the river forget it. Every spring the paint blistered where the sun got to it, and every spring she came down the towpath with a pot and touched it up, scolding the weather as though it had done it on purpose.

This morning the lines hold. The water is grey and flat as slate, and a heron stands on the lock gate watching you as if you owe it money. You untie the bow, step down onto the bank and feel the boat ease away from you, then come back to it slowly, the way a beast does once it has decided you are not worth the trouble. You rap the painted horn once with your knuckle. Vi would have called that luck. You are not sure, but you go inside and put the kettle on.
