Teacup and stacked books on upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A steaming teacup sits on a stack of three old hardback books, with the cup and books drawn in soft grey shading. The tattoo sits on the upper back, shown from behind against a beach and mountain backdrop. The linework is light and the shading gives the books and steam a gentle, dimensional look.

Mrs Ivy Calloway had been reading the same ledger for three hours when the rain started tapping the skylight of Pennock's Books, and she still had not found the missing sixpence. Nobody had asked her to look. The shop was hers now, and she had decided that the sum her late husband had pencilled in the margin of the 1952 accounts ought to match the till, or else the whole county would be lying to her.

She went through to the back kitchen to put the kettle on. The garden beyond the window was a grey smear of hydrangeas. On the draining board sat the blue pot, and beside it the three hardbacks she had dragged in from the wet step on Tuesday, their spines swollen, their covers warped like old bread. She set the cups on the stack to drip, then forgot them, and when she lifted the pot the steam curled up past the bindings in one thin ribbon.
That was when she saw it. A brown ring on the topmost book, sharp-edged as a coin. A tea ring, but not hers. Someone had set a cup on that very cover years ago and left a mark, and inside the flyleaf, in faded pencil, a column of figures ran down the page, each one crossed out except the last: 6d. Ivy laughed out loud in the empty shop. The sixpence had never been lost. It had been sitting on the books all along, waiting for a reader patient enough to drink her tea slowly and notice.
