The last sack of coffee beans came up the lift shaft in the spring the orchard lights failed, carried by a boy named Tobi who had walked down forty decks with it on his back. Mother Oda took one look at the burlap and sat down on the step, because nobody in Harrow Spindle had tasted anything dark in eleven years. She said the beans must be roasted in a clay pot over the reactor vent, slowly, the way her grandmother did it, and that the first cup belonged to whoever carried the sack.

Tobi said he had carried nothing. The sack had been left at the hatch with a note that read only: Make it for the one who is cold. Oda laughed, because everyone in the Spindle was cold, the heating having been rationed since the winter of the long dark. But she roasted the beans anyway. The kitchen filled with a smell like scorched sugar and rain on hot stone, and the steam curled up through the ventilation grate and out past the sealed windows, where no one had seen steam in years.

The first cup went to Oda, who was old and tired and wanted it to be someone else's turn. She held it out to Tobi. He shook his head. She passed it to Vell, the engineer, who passed it back. In the end it sat cooling on the window ledge while they argued, and a thin grey thread of steam rose from it and bent toward the glass. Far out past the hull, a ship's lamp blinked on, then off, then on again, like someone answering.

Oda poured a second cup for the stranger outside, though she had no way to hand it across the dark, and left it on the ledge. By morning the cup was empty and a single bean lay beside the saucer, split open like a seed. The window was furred with mist, and in the mist was a small clear heart where the warm breath had touched the glass. Tobi planted the bean in the orchard soil that night. Nobody said aloud what they hoped would grow, but they all went down to look at it every morning after.
