Teal and red roses on a wrist
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two roses sit side by side on the inner wrist, one in teal blue and the other in red with pink tones. The petals are outlined in dark ink and shaded with soft gradients to suggest folds. The plain skin and blurred striped chair behind the arm keep the focus on the small, centred design.

Mr Pryce had been dyeing roses in the back kitchen since the spring, and by June the whole of Calder Bridge knew it. He filled jam jars with water and a spoonful of blue ink he bought from the stationer's on Market Row, then stood the cut stems in them overnight, watching the colour climb the petals like damp up a wall. My job was to hold the scissors and keep my mouth shut about the smell.

The trouble started when Edna Holt came round with her red Albertines and asked to see the blue ones. She stood in our hallway with her gloves still on and said a rose that colour was a lie, and my father said a rose was whatever the customer paid for. They went on like that until the kettle boiled over. After she left, he took a single red bloom from the vase on the sideboard, held it up to the lamp, and said it looked lonely without something to stand beside.
So on the Saturday before the fete he took a blue rose and a red one, cut them to the same length, and tied them with green thread into one bunch. He set them in the shop window on a square of striped linen. People stopped on the pavement to look. Edna came in twice that morning to pretend she was buying bread.
The blue one lasted three days. The red one went on for a week after, its petals darkening to wine at the edges, and when I finally threw the bunch out I kept the green thread in my pocket for years.
