Lotus outline tattoo on a toe

Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up photograph of a black outline lotus with inner petal lines, tattooed on the top of a toe beside a blue painted nail. The linework is bold and even with no visible shading, and the design is the only ink in the image. The composition is tight on the foot against a dark textured leather surface, with the other toes softly out of focus behind.

The lift in Calder House had been dead since Easter, so I took the stairs every morning with my tray of paints and my knees complaining, and by the time I reached the fourteenth floor I had usually stopped being angry with the council and started being angry with the stairs. Mrs Okafor-Reid, whose door was propped open with a boot, wanted a lotus painted on the concrete wall of her balcony. "Not a rose," she said. "Roses are for people who have never had to wait for anything good to come up out of the mud."

I mixed the blue on a paint lid and started with the outer petals. She watched my hand the way she watched the pigeons on the railings, steady and unimpressed, and told me about the pond that used to sit in the middle of the estate before the council filled it with gravel for the bins. Her husband had kept goldfish there. Every summer, she said, one flower opened on the water, pale as a fingernail, and nobody could say where the seed came from, because the pond had been concrete for thirty years.

I worked for three hours. Each line went on black and dried quickly in the heat coming off the flats, and by the end the lotus sat above her plant pots like it had always been there. She pressed a coin into my palm. I said it was too much, and she said the coin was for the stairs.

On the way down I found a green shoot pushing through a crack on the ninth landing, no bigger than a thumbnail, rooted in a bit of old grime where somebody had dropped a seed packet or a bird had made a mistake. Nobody had planted it. I crouched beside it longer than I needed to, then went down the rest of the flights slowly, because for once the stairs seemed worth the trouble.
