White ink ornamental designs on a finger

Hand · Colour · Photo

A hand rests on blue denim with four white ink motifs stacked along the middle finger, including a tall arched panel, a rectangular band with a diamond centre, and a lobed cartouche. The fine white linework forms floral and scrolling ornament with small dotted detail. The ink is light against the skin tone, and the white nails and cool denim create a high-contrast composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pattern book had gone soft at the corners, so Ruth cut the stencils by lamplight, the way her mother had, with a blade sharpened so often it had lost a fingernail's width. Forty years of orders lay in shoeboxes under the bench: arched panels for the dressmaker's hems, rectangular bands for the church linen, lobed cartouches that the old vicar had asked for on the altar cloth and then never paid for. Every one came from the same master sheet of tracing paper, which had browned to the colour of stewed tea.

It was the cartouche that stopped her. The lowest lobe on the master had a small kink at its tip, a flaw no ruler would have made. Her mother had drawn it that way on purpose, Ruth was sure of it, though she had never said why. She ran her thumb along the kink, then held the stencil to the window, where the moon lay flat across the canal.

Next morning a woman came in with a sketch drawn on the back of a bus ticket and asked for something quiet, the sort of thing you could wear to a funeral without anyone asking. Ruth laid the old stencil against the sketch and saw that the lobes matched almost everywhere, except the bottom one, which the woman had drawn with a curve that looked like a question.

Ruth picked up the fine brush and painted the arched panel first, then the diamond band, working down the line one motif at a time. When she reached the lowest lobe she left the kink exactly where her mother would have left it, and the woman looked at it for a long moment before she nodded.
