Black and grey dotwork mountain landscape framed by a triangle outline on a forearm.

Mountain landscape in a triangle on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A tattoo of a mountain range sits inside a large triangle outline on the forearm. Stippled dotwork fades into the peak and sky area, while fine parallel lines shade the foreground slope and the right-hand mountain. The design is in black ink and greys, centred on the forearm against a plain background.

Mrs Ada Pryce had kept the same view from her kitchen window for forty years: the far ridge, the scree, and between them the notch where the sun went down in December. Her son Owen had come up from the valley to break the ice on the trough, and he stood in the doorway stamping snow from his boots, looking at the hill as though it had moved.

"Someone's been drawing on the mountain," he said. She had seen it too. New snow lay thick on the summit and speckled out into the grey sky above it, and the lower slope had ridges like ploughed rows where the wind had cut the drifts. Her husband used to call that the sheep's ironing board. She had never told him about the rest of it, how the sky above the peak turned to dots at dusk when the flakes came in thick.

They walked up with the dog and a bucket of salt. At the wall they stopped. From the field the hill looked like a triangle pressed into the land with a thumb, the way her mother used to press the lid onto a pie. Owen wanted to follow the ridge to see the drop on the far side. Ada wanted the ewes brought down before the light went.

They brought the ewes down. That night she breathed on the kitchen glass and drew a triangle in the mist with one finger, and through it the mountain filled up again, dark and dotted at the top. Owen came and stood behind her and, without a word, traced the outline alongside hers.
