Overlapping triangles on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a tattoo on the inner forearm showing two overlapping downward-pointing triangles. One triangle is a thin black outline, while the other is filled with stippled dotwork that fades from light grey at the top to dense black at the bottom. The plain dark red background keeps the focus on the skin and the crisp, minimal linework.

Sit closer, and mind the stove, it spits when the wind comes down off the hills. You want the border story? Everyone wants the border story. Listen. Forty years back there was a gate on the bridge at Sedlo, and a man called Tomo Kirchev kept it with a tin of chalk in his coat pocket. Every wagon that passed the post, he drew a mark on the timber where the rail met the wood. Three lines, pointing down, like a stone dropped into a well.

Nobody asked him what the marks meant. The guards thought he was keeping tally of sheep. The carters thought he was a fool who liked drawing. But Tomo knew which wagons carried the things that were allowed and which carried the things that were not, and he drew the allowed ones in a single clean outline. The others he shaded, dusting them with the soot from his lamp, pressing lighter at the top and harder at the base, so that anyone who knew the sign could read how heavy the load had been and how long it would be before the rain took it.
The rain took everything in the end. Tomo's daughter, Ilinka, scrubbed the post every spring with a wire brush, and every spring the soot faded out in its soft grey top and left the dark stain only at the bottom where the wood had drunk it in. The outlines, though, never shifted. Chalk bites into grain the way a promise bites into a man. So when the new officers arrived with their paint and their clipboards and orders to make the old gate look respectable, they found nothing to scrub but the lines, and the lines were the one thing on that bridge that would not come off.
