Teal rose with leaves on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A teal rose with white highlights forms the centre of the design, surrounded by ochre and grey leaves and thin grey sprigs. The rose has bold black outlines and smooth shading in green, while the leaves use darker outlines and orange-brown tones. The tattoo fills the middle of the forearm, with the arm shown against a plain, softly blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mrs Ada Pennock had kept the old brick school at Thornley Bottom for forty years, and when the reunion was called for the last Saturday in June, nobody could say who had sent the letters. They arrived in the same brown envelopes the registers used to come in, each with a teal rose stamped in one corner, and the villagers came in their good coats and sat on the benches they had once carved their initials under.

Harold Quig, who had been the quiet one at the back, brought a tin of custard creams and a story nobody had asked for. He said the rose grew only in the schoolyard wall, where the lime had leaked green, and that a child who pressed a leaf into her reader would be remembered by whoever turned that page next. They laughed at him. Then the old headmaster's reader was passed round the room, and every leaf inside had gone the colour of weak tea, and beneath each one was a name in pencil that everyone had forgotten writing.
Ruth Ashby went very still. She had pressed a sprig into the reader the spring her brother left for the mill towns, and she had never gone back for it. Nobody spoke. Then the bell in the lych gate rang once by itself, the way it used to for the first morning of term.
They stayed until the light went. When they finally left, a teal rose had been painted fresh above the school door, its ochre leaves bright as new pennies, and Ruth carried the reader home on her knee all the way up the lane, turning the pages slowly so that the names would not fall out.
