Teal scale pattern on a hip

Other · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows rows of overlapping scale-like arcs with soft shading, centred on a small pale circular highlight. Smaller scale shapes trail away from the main cluster towards the lower edge. The ink is teal and grey-green with lighter halo edges, photographed close up on a tanned hip beside a pink waistband.

Nobody in Halvern-on-Lune trusted the eel-wife after the flood, but when the canal iced over that February and the bridge men went home, they still knocked on her door after midnight. She sat under a single lamp with a heap of green-grey scales in her lap, each no bigger than a thumbnail, and she stitched them onto a leather jerkin for the ferryman's boy. She laid them overlapping, the way slates lie on the chapel roof, so the rows fanned out from the chest like the wake of a boat.

Why do you never use a needle with an eye, the boy asked. She said the eye was for the living, and this work was for the river. Every scale had a pale ring at its heart, where a drop of moonlight had been caught and cooled to hold. Give a scale its ring, she said, and the water knows it is owed something back. She worked until the lamps along the quay went out one by one, and the boy counted them with his fingers against the cold window.

On the last night she had one scale left, and it would not sit in the lowest row. It kept sliding toward the edge, so she let it trail, a few small ones dropping away like minnows following a barge. Come the thaw, she said, the river will ask for its change, and you must give it. The boy wore the jerkin to the ferry at first light.

When the ice broke, the crossing was short and the water lay black and still. He saw his reflection in it, the teal rows catching the grey dawn, and beneath them a line of ringed scales running down toward the depths. The river took the rope from his hand as gently as a shopkeeper takes coins. He did not come back up, but the jerkin did, folded neatly on the bank.
