Gold bride tribe lettering on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A hand is turned to show the inner wrist and forearm, with the words bride tribe written in flowing gold script across the skin. The lettering appears to be a metallic foil temporary tattoo, with smooth, slightly brushed strokes and no shading. A soft pink flower sits in the lower left against a pale background, and the bright gold stands out clearly against the skin.

Every spring the Marrow Brothers' fair came up the valley road with its painted horses wrapped in sacking, and every spring old Hannah Pell walked down from the top farm to see whether the sign-writer had come with it. He had. His name was Tobias Nye. He carried his gold leaf in a tin box lined with black velvet, and he would letter anything for a penny a letter if you could hold still long enough.

The Ashworth girls came to the fair the week before Ellen's wedding. There were five of them, cousins and sisters and a neighbour's daughter who had only been asked because she could whistle. They wanted their names painted on the wall of the big tent so the bride would know who had come for her. Tobias looked at them, looked at the cold October sky, and said he would write one word, not five names, because a single word could carry more weight than a list. He asked what it should say. They argued until the lamps were lit.
In the end they settled on two words: bride and tribe. The second was the neighbour's girl's idea, since she said that was what they were, and nobody argues with a whistler. Tobias brushed the letters in gold onto tissue, pressed it to the inside of each girl's wrist, and dampened it with a sponge from his tin. When he peeled the paper away, the gold stayed. He told them it would last until the first washing, which is about how long a promise lasts at a fairground, and he was right about that too.
Ellen wore the gold under her glove cuff so the vicar would not see it, and only the girls knew. The next spring a tin of seed cake came up the valley road with a note tucked under the lid: the same two words, for the next one. Tobias laughed until he had to sit down on his caravan step, then he took out his brushes and began.
