Open book and coffee cup on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of an open book and a coffee cup with wisps of steam sits on the inner forearm, with a silver coin placed beneath it for scale. The outlines are thin, single-needle lines in black ink, with minimal shading and no fill. The two motifs sit side by side on plain skin against a pale, softly lit background.

The coffee ring was the first thing Mrs Lowry noticed, a brown crescent on page 212 exactly the width of a café mug. She held the library copy of Middlemarch under the strip light at the returns desk and turned it over, as though the stain might explain itself. Three weeks overdue, the card in the back pocket showed a borrower who had taken it out in March and never once returned to the branch since.

Inside the back cover, below the stamped due dates, someone had pencilled notes in the margins. Beside a chapter about a marriage going sour: 'Do not trust this man with the teapot.' Beside a paragraph on bread prices: 'Mine too.' Mrs Lowry found herself smiling at a stranger's handwriting, and before she could stop herself she wrote beneath the last note: 'Which of us is right about Lydgate?'

The book came back the following Thursday, pushed through the chute with a bus ticket marking page 340. Beneath her question, in a looping hand, someone had answered: 'Neither. I read it in the café on Cross Street with the blue awning. It shut on Tuesday.' Mrs Lowry checked the renewal screen, then the shelf list, then the calendar on the wall. She took the pencil from behind her ear and wrote on a fresh slip: 'Try the one with the green awning, opposite the chemist. Decent cup. Bring the book back on time.'
