Teddy bear in green dungarees
Other · Colour · Photo
A teddy bear stands upright with its paws at its sides and wears green dungarees with braces over a rounded, slightly fuzzy brown body. The bear has shaded fur, black eyes and a light muzzle, with soft highlights and darker shadowing along the body and dungaree folds. The bear is set against plain skin with a faint shadow beside it, in a close crop.

The bear had been left on a bollard at the end of the fish quay in a February gale, and by the time Maureen Scatchard found it the rain had flattened the fur on one side. Nobody came for it. The lost property tin at the net loft filled with gloves and bait knives, and the bear sat on top of the pile with its paws at its sides, as if waiting to be called for the morning tide.

Dennis Pell, who mended nets for the Constance and two other boats, took to talking to it while he worked. He told it about the Dogger Bank, about the skipper who hummed hymns at the wheel, about the hake that got into the cod pound. The dungarees had been cut from an old pair of green work trousers and the braces made from a bootlace, and Dennis reckoned whoever had made them had been a fisherman's wife with a sharp needle and no time to spare.
In March the Constance came back a man short. Tomasz, a lad who had only signed on in the autumn, had gone over the side off the Faroes, and the boat had searched for an hour in the black swell before the skipper called it off. Dennis went down to the loft for spare oilskins and found the bear moved. It was sitting on the bench by the door, facing the quay, its button eyes turned towards the water.
He never learned who had shifted it. Maureen swore it hadn't been her. That evening Dennis carried the bear down to the Constance and wedged it in the wheelhouse with its braces hooked over the radio set, and the skipper, who had not once in twenty years allowed a toy aboard, said nothing at all. They sailed with the bear watching the bow, and when the boat came in heavy with fish, nobody suggested taking it back to the loft.
