Cartoon panda holding bamboo

Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon panda sits with its paws resting on a green bamboo stalk angled across its body. The outlines are soft and slightly fuzzy, with brown shading on the ears, eye patches and paws, and small red pads on the paws. Green ink on the bamboo and red pads stand out against the pale skin, and the design is centred on the skin with a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Marrow Hollow could say when Bertram the panda had started carrying that bamboo stalk, only that it was never out of his paws. He leaned it against the post office counter while he signed for parcels. He prodded the duck pond with it to measure the depth, and he tapped on the bakery window at six each morning so Mrs Ruddock would know he had arrived.

She asked him once what the stalk was for. Bertram considered this with the gravity of a bear who had never been asked a proper question before. "It holds me up," he said, "when I sit down to think." Mrs Ruddock laughed, then noticed he meant every word, and gave him a sticky bun for the thought.

The storm came on a Thursday, the sort that lifts slates and sends hens up into the apple trees. The river rose over the lane and cut the village in two, and the footbridge groaned like an old gate. Bertram walked down to the water in his striped wellies, pulled the stalk from under his arm, and laid it across the gap between the banks. Mrs Ruddock held the lantern while the schoolchildren crossed one by one, clutching each other's coats.

Afterwards the bamboo stayed where it had fallen, green and split at one end, and nobody had the heart to move it. By Saturday two thin leaves had unfurled from the cut. In the mud beside the bridge, four round prints were still pressed deep, one for each paw, the red pads Mrs Ruddock swore she could still see glowing through the wet.
