Temporary tattoo sheet with script words and birds
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A pale blue sheet of temporary tattoo designs lies on artificial grass. It includes thin script phrases such as 'not all who wander are lost', 'be here now' and 'stay strong', alongside single words, a heart and a flock of small bird silhouettes. The designs use fine black and white linework with no shading, and they are arranged in loose rows across the sheet.

Sit down, the lot of you, before the kettle boils itself dry. I'll tell it once and no interrupting, Mr Pascoe, I know what you're going to say about gulls.

The sheet came up in the bottom of a suitcase that Mrs Rendell's nephew left behind in room four when he went off in a hurry one wet October. Pale blue paper, pressed flat, and all over it a scatter of thin black and white script. Not all who wander are lost, across the top. Be here now, down in the corner, very small. Stay strong. Always. And a flock of little birds, a dozen of them, every one heading the same way, out past the edge of the paper where nothing was printed at all.
Dennis had bought them for a girl in Margate who was going to Canada. That was the story Mrs Rendell gave, anyway, and she never once told it the same way twice. What she did do was cut the words out with the good sewing scissors and stick them about the house. Always went above the mirror in the hall. Love went on the bread bin. A bird went on the back of the front door, where the wind off the harbour rattled it every night at the turn of the tide.
By spring the sheet was empty, and nobody could say who had taken the last of the birds. Mrs Rendell swore on her mother's Bible that she had not. Then the fishing boat Mary Ellen came in without her skipper, and the first thing the coastguard found aboard was a small bird stuck to the inside of the wheelhouse glass, every wing turned towards the open sea. Well. Make your tea. It's only the gulls.
