Right, sit down before the gulls have your crusts. No, Tam, you'll not hear it standing up. Now, the hibiscus. Everyone thinks a flower is only pretty, but this one has manners. It opens at dawn and it's shut by dark, one day and no more, and the bees know it, which is why they come early.

Old Mrs Pryce kept a single plant in a tin bath on the sill above the chandler's shop, down by the lower steps where the fishing boats tie up. Every morning she watched for the bloom to lift its red skirts, and every evening she pinched the spent petals off so the next could open. Her husband Evan sailed the Mary Ann on the coast run, and he'd been gone eleven weeks when the storm came in off the bay.
The women on the quay said a flower kept indoors was bad luck. Mrs Pryce said nothing. She carried the tin down to the water's edge the night the lifeboat went out, and she set the bloom facing the lamps at the harbour mouth, the way Evan had taught her to set a compass card at home, so that the light fell straight through the red.
Morning came up grey. The Mary Ann crept in past the breakwater with a torn sail and five men aboard, and the first thing Evan saw from the deck was one red flower on the wet stone, open wider than any he had ever seen, lit like a signal. The plant has no sense of direction, mind, but it knows where the light is, and that was enough. Now, who wants the next bit?
