Tetris blocks on two wrists

Geometric · Other · Colour · Photo

Two pairs of wrists are shown side by side, each with a small Tetris-style tattoo. The left wrist carries a single T-shaped piece, and the right wrist carries two S and Z-shaped pieces. The blocks are outlined with clean, even linework and filled in blue with lighter shading, set against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lorry has been sitting in bay four since half past six, and you have counted the pallets twice on the manifest and once with your own eyes. Twenty-two declared, twenty-two present. The trailer doors are open to the cold, and the driver waits by the cab, watching you the way people watch a clock they cannot stop.

You climb onto the tail lift and look at the load. Tins of tomatoes are stacked tight as brickwork, but near the back there is a hole in the plan, three squares of empty air in a shape that belongs to nothing on the sheet. It takes you a moment to see it as a shape at all. Then it arrives: a T, with a stepped pair beside it, one riser going up and one going down, as if someone had packed the trailer the way you would fit a grey handheld game when you were nine and too stubborn to lose.

You ask him about it, and he laughs, a short surprised sound. His brother taught him to load that way, he says, one piece after another until nothing is left to slide. The gap is there because the pallet that should fill it was sold at the last depot, and he did not want the load to look ragged on the sheet. He has been carrying that empty space for three hundred miles so the rest of it would stay true.

You stamp the seal and write no discrepancy beside the gap, because it is the first honest thing the manifest has shown you all morning. The trailer pulls out into the grey light toward the ferry, and the hole at the back holds its shape all the way to the barrier.
