The crate of tinned peaches came off the lorry at Ashby Cross with one corner stove in, and by teatime you had already decided it was a problem for the two of you to solve. Mrs Hollis at the post office said the tins were spoiled. You said nothing spoiled could be stacked so neatly, and your brother Dennis laughed and nudged the lowest tin with his boot until the heap shifted into a shape like the letter T.

All that summer you built on the loading bay behind the Co-op, one crate at a time, and every evening you argued over what the stock should become next. Dennis wanted the long bar that would clear four rows at once and make the lorry driver whistle. You wanted the awkward S that fitted the gap by the drainpipe only if you turned it twice. Nobody in town understood why two grown men cared so much about where a box went, and you stopped explaining after the second week.
In September the council sent a man with a clipboard, and the stack came down in an afternoon. Dennis was called up that winter to a posting you were not allowed to name. The letter he sent from the train was only a sketch of a grid with one square missing, and under it, in his careful capitals: LEAVE THE GAP. SOMEONE ALWAYS HAS TO FIT THE LAST ONE.
The following spring the bay was empty, the drainpipe still dripped, and you found a single crate pushed into the corner where the wall met the bins. You turned the awkward piece twice, the way he always did, and it slid home with a sound like a latch.
