Matching Tetris block tattoos on wrists

Geometric · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two inner wrists show small matching tattoos made of square blocks arranged as Tetris pieces. The left wrist has a cross-like arrangement of four blocks, and the right has two interlocking stepped pieces. Each block is outlined and softly shaded in grey and black on pale skin, with a plain background of dark clothing and denim.

Our Marjorie kept the sorting line at the Kirkby Fold depot running on sheer spite. Every shift the conveyor fed us tinned peaches, bath sponges and odd-shaped crates of ceramic hens, and every shift we had to fit them into the bays like a jigsaw nobody had asked for. Her one rule was that nothing leaves the dock with a gap.

Dev and I were the two youngest on the night rota that winter, and we got stuck with the bay by the north door, where the racking had a notch cut into it. It was a stepped hole the exact shape of nothing we ever stocked. Dev said it was a chimney. I said it was a mistake from 1979. We spent the first hour of each shift turning crates over in our heads, saying "that one goes there, no, that one", until the forklift driver started timing us.

On the last Friday before Christmas a pallet of cereal boxes tipped across the aisle and the stacks slid. We stood in the dust and watched the cardboard drop into the notch, one piece after another. Four of them made a cross, then two stepped pieces slid in and locked as if they had been waiting all year. The whole floor went quiet. Marjorie came down the aisle with her clipboard, looked at the rack for a long time, and said nothing at all, which from her was a medal.

Dev and I got matching ink the week after, small squares on the insides of our wrists, the way you might mark a shift you survived. The gap is still there, Marjorie tells the new lads. Nobody has been brave enough to fill the rest.
