Tetris block tattoos on wrist and palm

Geometric · Hand · Colour · Photo

The photograph shows two pairs of hands and wrists, each marked with a small Tetris-style block tattoo in blue ink. The left tattoo is a T-shaped piece on the palm near the wrist, and the right wrist carries a three-piece group of S and Z shaped blocks. The blocks are outlined and filled with lighter squares to suggest depth, and the image is a close, evenly lit view against a dark background.

Day 412 of the long drift, and the hydroponics bay has finally stopped humming in the key that gave Oyelaran headaches. I am writing this at the galley table with the ship's clock reading 03:10 and nobody awake but me and the recycler. Yesterday the grid in the forward hold crashed again, and for six hours we ran on the old maintenance terminal, which still has the falling-blocks game buried in its diagnostics menu. Tomas found it. He is nineteen and has never once admitted to being bored, but he played until his thumbs cramped, then went quiet and drew a little blue shape on his wrist with a marker pen from the stores locker.

I told him it was foolish. The Board would call it a waste of ink. Then I watched him place the last piece in the bottom corner and clear four rows in one go, and his whole face lit up the way the screen did, and I did not say anything at all.

This morning he had a second one drawn, a stepped zigzag on the back of his wrist, and he pressed it against Oyelaran's palm when she came off shift so the two marks lined up like a joke only they understood. She rolled her eyes and kept her hand where it was for a good while longer than she needed to.

We reach the relay station in nine weeks by the ship's count. Somebody will have to tell the Board about the terminal. I have decided it can wait until the blocks have stopped falling, which, if I am honest, they never do on a voyage like this. Lights are dimming to night cycle. I am going to go and find Tomas before he tries to draw a third piece on himself.
