Texas outline filled with paisley and flowers

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A bold black outline forms the shape of the state of Texas, filled with paisley motifs, scrolling swirls and a pink five-petal flower. The linework is thick and uniform, and the interior uses flat areas of pink, orange and yellow with small dotted detail. The tattoo sits centrally on the top of a foot against a plain pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fiddler has tuned twice and still hasn't started, so you lean on the cold rail of the Lantern Hall and watch Dolores Pruitt sweep paisley scraps off the boards with her broom. She has been cutting shirts for the whole county since 1958, and she keeps the offcuts in a biscuit tin on the wall beside the coat hooks. You tell her the tin is the only thing in Calloway Creek worth stealing. She says you can have it when she's dead, and not a minute before.

Your brother is getting married on Saturday and wants the state drawn on everything: napkins, the cake, the bass drum. You have been sketching it all week on the backs of feed receipts, but the outline keeps coming out lopsided, the panhandle too long, as if someone stretched Texas to fit a postcard. Dolores takes the pencil from your hand, licks the point, and fills the top of the shape with teardrops that curl back on themselves. Then she draws a pink flower with five round petals in the middle of the Hill Country and hands the pencil back without a word.

The band finally starts with a waltz nobody can dance properly, so you dance it badly with Tom Eddy, who steps on your good foot twice and apologises both times. Over his shoulder the paisley on the wall shivers in the lamplight, every shape pressed hard against its black edge, nothing spilling out past the line.

When the set ends you find the pencil on the floor by the cake table, where the bass drum was dragged across it. Beside a boot print, a smear of orange still curls into the shape of a panhandle. You fold that scrap into your shirt pocket and keep it, the way Dolores keeps her tin.
