The rest is still unwritten lettering options
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
This sheet shows the phrase the rest is still unwritten followed by an ellipsis, repeated six times in different typefaces. The styles range from a heavy serif with ornamental swirls, a bold blackletter-like face with dripping strokes, and several flowing cursive scripts to a light, sketchy handwritten version. All lettering is in solid black on a white background, with no shading and no colour.

Orla had cut six sets of type for the closing page of the Meridian Record before the council agreed on a face. The heavy serif went first, all curls and ornamental tangles, because Brennan, the chair, wanted something that looked carved over a fire. Then came the blackletter with its dripping strokes, which Tamsin said looked like rain down a window the morning after a funeral. Orla minded that they argued over ink at all, with eleven hundred mouths to feed on half rations.

The cursives came next, three of them, each leaning a little further from the last. The sketchiest hand was printed last, on the cheapest recycled sheet in the hold. Its letters thinned out toward the ellipsis, as if the pen had stopped to listen. Brennan wanted the ornate one, Tamsin the bold one, and Orla, who kept the record and had the final say, put her thumb on the plainest sheet of all.
The ship had been travelling for ninety-one years and nobody aboard had seen a planet. Every page of the Record ended the same way, on a line that promised more. The children copied the sheet onto their slates and argued over which curl belonged to which landing. Orla filed the set in the drawer marked unfinished and turned the key.
Years later her granddaughter asked why the last page was still blank. Orla took out the pale sheet and guided a small finger along the dots at the end. 'That's the bit you get to write,' she said, and went back to her ledger.
