Thin black bands on two ring fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands rest on a pale green sheet, one overlapping the other, with a thin solid black band tattooed around the ring finger of each hand. The linework is clean and uniform, with no shading, and the ink is the only colour against the green fabric and the navy sleeves. The close, top-down framing places both bands near the centre of the photograph.

Dear Hannah,

I should have said this at the reunion instead of hiding behind the raffle table. The hall smelled of floor polish and Mr Ashby's cologne, and you were the only person there who remembered the biro rings we drew on at fourteen, behind the bike sheds at Calder Grange, when we swore they would never wash off.
We were idiots then, with that cheap blue ink that smudged the moment you pushed your sleeve up. You said it would be gone by Monday. Mine was. Yours was still there in the car park, faint as a bruise, and you laughed at me for checking it under the streetlight.
So last month I climbed the stairs above the chip shop on Mill Road and had a thin black band done, no thicker than a bootlace. The woman with the tiny magnifier asked whether it was for someone. I said it was for the girl who wouldn't let me forget the first one, and she said that was the best reason she'd heard all week.
I've enclosed a photo of my hand on the green bedsheet, with the other one resting over it. I'm told the second hand is yours, or at least I hope it is. Tell me if the lines still match, and if they don't, I'll come and smudge mine out with you.
