Matching outline triangles on two fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are placed side by side against a background of green grass, showing a small outlined triangle on a finger of each hand. The triangles are drawn in thin, even black linework with no shading or fill. The ink is the only colour in the composition, which is otherwise dominated by the natural tones of the skin and the grass.

The chain was forty links short of the church spire when Ada Lowry told Thomas Quill to stop walking. He stopped. She had her theodolite set on its tripod at the top of Cold Ash Rise and had been working the angles in her head for an hour, muttering them the way Methodists muttered hymns.

The three stations refused to close. Each triangle carried a sliver of error, a few seconds of arc that would not be argued away, and Thomas wanted to rub the figures out and call the county surveyed. Ada would not allow it. She walked the baseline again in the rain, the chain sagging in the wet grass, while he held the staff and swore quietly at the wind.
That night at the Wyke inn they sat with the field book between them and a candle guttering in its own grease. Ada took a steel nib and drew a small outline triangle on the inside cover, then another beside it, pressing so lightly the lines barely held. If the error was hers, she said, it would not be hers alone. Thomas took the pen and drew one more, and they agreed without speaking that each would keep a mark of the same shape in their own pocket book, so no one could later say which of them had been careless.
The survey was accepted in May. A man from London found the discrepancy in a stretched chain, and the fault was traced to a single afternoon of rain. Ada kept the book in a drawer for thirty years. Each time she opened it, the two small triangles were the only thing in the whole county's accounts that matched exactly, and she never corrected them.
