Think happy thoughts lettering on the nape
Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small black serif script reads Think happy thoughts across the back of the neck, set just below the hairline and above a denim collar. The letters are solid black with fine, even lines and no shading, and the photo is taken from behind with a warm, soft-focus tone. The composition is centred on the tattoo, with the braids framing it on either side.

The tarpaulin has been sagging since seven, and by ten the rain is pooling in its belly, so you prod it with a broom handle every quarter hour and send the water sliding off the edge onto the pavement of Saltergate Market. Nobody else is trading in this weather except the man selling phone cases from a van, and he has given up pretending to be cheerful. You sit on an upturned crate behind a trestle of secondhand children's books, their spines swollen and their corners soft, and you wait for customers who are not coming.

The boy arrives just before eleven, dripping and certain. He has four pound coins in a fist and wants the battered Peter Pan with no cover, the one priced at sixty pence because the last page is missing. You tell him it's a bargain. He counts the coins twice and is still a penny short, so you tell him to keep the penny. He asks you how a person is supposed to think happy thoughts in weather like this, and you think about it for longer than he expects, because it seems like the one question worth a proper answer today.
You tell him to pick one thing and hold onto it until it gets warm in his hands. He nods as if you have explained how to fly, tucks the book inside his coat, and runs off between the stalls with the puddles spraying up behind him. You stay where you are. After a while the rain thins to a drizzle, then to nothing, and the water under your trestle shows a thin strip of pale sky. You get up, stretch your back, and roll the tarpaulin tight.
