Three birds in flight silhouette

Black and grey · Flash

The image shows three solid black silhouettes of birds in flight, each with wings spread at a different angle, arranged in a diagonal line from lower left to upper right. The shapes are filled with flat black ink with no internal detail, shading or linework. The plain white background and generous empty space around the birds give the design a clean, minimal composition.

Dear Margery,

You will laugh at me, but I have taken to counting birds. Since the frost broke, three of them come over the east wall every evening just after Vespers, flying low over the mill race in a line that looks drawn with a rule. The leader is always the one with the long tail, the middle one flaps too hard, and the third keeps falling behind until I think it will give up, then it lifts again. Brother Osric says they are wood pigeons bound for the beeches at Haddon. I say they are the abbey's three bells, come back from the foundry to see whether we have been ringing them properly.

Last Thursday the lay brother Tobin found the smallest one in the herb garden, its left wing folded wrong. He wanted to wring its neck for the pot, as the rule permits in a hard winter, but Abbot Hilary said no, and sat on the bench with it in his lap for an hour while the light went. When it finally lifted, it went straight up over the wall and did not go after the others. We all watched the place where the two had been, and I confess I felt the rule about silence strain in my throat.

Next evening there were only two over the mill race. I have stopped counting them now and simply look up. The leader still has his long tail. The middle one still flaps too hard. The third, I think, has found a branch somewhere on the far side of the fen and is sitting quite still, which is what I would do too if I had been so tired.

Pray for me, sister, and for the wood pigeons of Haddon.

Your brother, Anselm
