Three cartoon women on an upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows three cartoon-style female figures standing side by side with their arms folded. Bold dark outlines and flat colour fills in red, green, teal and grey define the figures, with little or no shading. The figures fill most of the frame against lightly freckled skin.

Nell had spent the whole coach journey arguing that a moat was a ditch with ambitions, and the ruined gatehouse of Harrowgate Keep did nothing to change her mind. Tove, in her red jacket, was the one who had found the way down to the cellars, and she announced it the way she announced everything, as a mild inconvenience to be borne. "There's a drain," she said. "Or a grave. Possibly both." Ines, beside her, pushed her glasses up her nose and wrote it down, because Ines wrote everything down, including the things she thought were dull, in case they turned out not to be.

They spent forty minutes in the dark. Nell would have called it a waste of an afternoon if the drain had not turned out to be a real drain, with real water, running straight under the keep and out past the wall. Nobody had mentioned that the castle was built on top of a river. Ines underlined it twice.

When they climbed back into the light, mud to the laces, the coach had already gone round to the car park. Mr Okafor was nowhere. Tove sat down on a fallen block and sighed. Nell looked at her, then at Ines, and for once none of them had anything to add, so they stood where they were, arms crossed, waiting for someone with a camera to come and find them.
