Cartoon character and roses on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A side-by-side pair of photos showing a colour tattoo on the outer thigh. A cartoon character with large glasses and a green jacket, arms folded, sits in the centre, surrounded by blue roses with green leaves and orange accents. The words I HATE EVERYONE curve across the top in black lettering. Bold black outlines and flat fills give it a classic traditional look, and the close-up photo shows the tattoo filling most of the frame.

The reunion was held in the old assembly hall, where the floorboards still gave under your heels, and Mab Ferris walked in twenty minutes late with her arms folded before anyone could offer her a name badge. She had come for one reason, which was to be seen not caring. Her green jacket was the one she had worn at sixteen, a little tight across the shoulders, and she wore it like a sentry box.

Tom Ashby came over with a plate of sausage rolls and said he had always thought she was the cleverest person in the year. Mab looked at the pastry, then at him, and said that was the sort of thing a man said when he had copied her answers in chemistry. He went red and walked away, and she felt the small cold satisfaction of a door shutting properly. That was the rule she had made at fifteen and kept ever since: keep the door shut and nobody gets in to disappoint you.
Mr Pell, the caretaker, was still there, though he was ninety if he was a day. He had kept the boiler going through three headteachers and every winter of her childhood. He did not ask how she was. He simply handed her a paper cup of squash and said the blue roses by the railings were out again, the ones nobody could ever get to grow, and she had better go and look before the frost took them.
She went out into the cold without her coat. The roses were there, blue as ink under the streetlamp, and one had been trodden flat. She crouched and lifted it, and found she was not angry at all, only tired, which was worse. When she came back in she took the empty chair beside Mr Pell and folded her arms again, but loosely, the way you hold a thing you intend to keep.
