Two cartoon characters holding hands on a thigh
Thigh · Mixed · Photo
Two stylised cartoon women stand side by side holding hands, shown in full length with outlined figures and simple features. The woman on the left wears round glasses and a teal jacket with a dark skirt, while the woman on the right has a dark bob and a red jacket with shorts. Both wear chunky black boots, with soft grey shading on the clothes and legs, and short black lettering runs down the left side of the thigh.

Nobody at the Harrowgate Heritage Trust had asked us to climb the keep, which is exactly why Marnie wanted to. She stood on the bottom step in her green anorak, round glasses pushed up into her orange hair, and read the laminated sign aloud in the voice she usually saved for cafeteria menus. "Danger. Unstable masonry. Do not proceed beyond this point." Then she proceeded.

I followed with my hands jammed in the pockets of my red jacket, which is how I carry things I have no intention of using. Below us the moat was a green dish of duckweed, and a boy on a bicycle shouted something about a ghost called Old Hobb. Halfway up the spiral stair, Marnie reached back without looking and took my hand, the way she did when she had decided a problem was mine as well as hers. I let her. The walls were scratched with centuries of initials and, near the top, a line someone had gouged into the mortar with a nail: WWLD?! Marnie traced the question mark with one finger and said it was the most honest thing anyone had written in the building.
At the parapet a stone gave way under my boot. It was not dramatic. It simply slid out, considered the drop, and kept going. Marnie's glasses fell off her head, and I caught them on the way down, one lens cracked clean across. She looked at me, then at the view, then back at me.
"Well," she said. "That's the masonry."
We sat on the warm ledge with the wind in our hair and shared a flask of tea that tasted of the flask. When the rangers finally came up the stairs, shouting, we were still holding hands, which I suspect was the only part of the afternoon either of us had planned.
