Three cupcakes on an ankle and heel

Ankle · Colour · Photo

Three cartoon-style cupcakes sit across the ankle and heel, each with a pink, green or blue frosting and a cherry on one. Small dots and tiny star-like sparkles surround them. The outlines are bold and the colour is flat and bright, with little shading, and the image is shown in a neutral, evenly lit close-up.

The last tray of the night was always the hardest to sell, and Mrs Okonedo knew it. She had three cupcakes left on the cooling rack at the back of the Loveday Street bakery, pink, green and blue, each with its frosting piped into a little peak, and not one of them had found a home since six. The shop lights buzzed. Outside, the bus shelter glowed like a fish tank.

Her nephew Dele came through the back door with a bin bag and a face full of opinions. "Nobody buys a cupcake at ten past eleven," he said. "They buy a cupcake at half two, when they are sad."

"Then we will be sad together," said Mrs Okonedo, and she cut the cherries off the top of the pink one and set it on a saucer. She dusted the blue with sugar stars from the tin she kept for birthdays. The green she left plain, because it had earned its plainness.

They ate them standing up by the sink, while the street outside went quiet and a single taxi hissed past with its light on. Dele licked his thumb. Mrs Okonedo found a dot of frosting on the lino and pressed it flat with her shoe, and the sparkle tin was empty by the time they locked up.

In the morning the three cakes were gone from the rack, and a tip jar stood on the counter with a note taped to it in careful capitals: PAID IN FULL, THANK YOU FOR THE STARS.
