Three dragon eggs and a Dracarys banner on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A central teal dragon egg with scale texture sits between a purple egg on the left and an orange egg on the right, all outlined in black. A black ribbon banner across the lower part of the design carries the word DRACARYS in white lettering. The eggs use smooth gradient shading that fades toward the bottom, and the colour is bright and saturated against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferryman's daughter found the eggs in the reed bed below Sallow Ford, three of them, laid in a nest of scorched bracken. The purple one was cold to the touch, the orange one warm as new bread, and the teal one, the largest, had a skin of overlapping scales like a fish dipped in river light. Her mother said dragons did not nest in marsh country and she should leave them be. She carried them home in her apron anyway.

Through the wet winter she kept them by the hearth in a bowl of sand. The purple egg never stirred. The orange one knocked twice a night, like a neighbour asking to be let in. The teal egg she turned each morning, and each morning it grew heavier, until the bowl would not hold it and she moved it to a basket by the door. Men from the upper village came to look and went away quiet, because they had heard what became of the wool merchant's sheep.

The orange one hatched first, in the thaw, and sneezed a little flame onto the rushes. The teal one came with a sound like a cart going over stones. The purple egg held out until the ford froze and she had stopped expecting anything from it. She found it at dawn, cracked along one side, with a wing folded inside as flat as a letter.

Her grandfather had shouted one word at the wolves that came down the scree, a word from a language nobody in the valley spoke any more. Dracarys. The girl tried it on the teal one when the wolves came in the second spring. It rose off the bank, scales catching the last light over the water, and the wolves turned back up the hill. She counted her three against the sunset, and the ford was quiet.
