Pineapple and pink flowers on the back of a hand

Traditional · Hand · Colour · Photo

A pineapple with a yellow-orange body and teal crown fills the centre of the image, flanked by two pink five-petalled flowers with yellow centres and teal leaves. Bold black outlines define the fruit, leaves and petals, with solid colour fills and soft blue shading behind the pineapple. The tattoo sits on the back of a hand against a dark background, and a partly visible ribbon banner with letters cut off at the edge appears at the top left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pineapple had been Marisol's idea, a joke that outlived the bet it was meant to settle. Rob had lost the argument about the Blackpool donkey rides and owed her a fortnight of Sunday mornings at the Winter Gardens, and instead of paying up he had sulked in the caravan and drawn a pineapple on the back of a bus ticket. It looked like a hand grenade wearing a crown. She laughed so hard she had to sit on the step.

The tattooist, a woman with a dragonfly on her neck and a kettle that never stopped steaming, took the ticket, squinted at it, and said the crown was going to be the hard part. Marisol watched the needle go in and out, the black lines going down like the rails of a tram, and she thought about how the fruit was supposed to mean welcome, which was a thing you could only really say to someone standing in your doorway. Rob, who had come along to hold her coffee, went quiet and pale and turned to look at the pier.

They walked back along the front afterwards with the cling film crackling on her hand, past the chip shops and the closed amusements. At the corner by the tram stop he took her hand carefully, the way you would hold a package marked fragile, and the pink flowers on the back of it caught the streetlight. Neither of them mentioned the donkeys. She decided the bet was a draw, and that she was the one who had got the better deal.
