Three elephants and script on a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Three solid black elephant silhouettes walk in a line across the top of a bare foot, with the smallest in the middle, and the script words One step at a time sit beneath them. The silhouettes are filled and the script is fine and fluid, with some grey softness in the photograph. The foot fills most of the frame against a grey textured rug.

The lorry had slid into the ditch at Hollin Lane the week before Christmas, and by January the show had gone on without its elephants. They wintered in our long barn, three of them, and you were the one sent out each morning with the hay fork and a pail of bran, because Ruth Carrow said you had the patience of a fence post. Frost stood on every cobble of the yard like salt.

The calf, Bessie-Jo, would not cross the ice to the water trough. She planted her feet and swung her trunk at the ground as if the yard might be a trick. Her mother, Mabel, stood behind her with the slow, stubborn look of someone who had already decided everything. Ruth shouted from the gate about the bran going cold. You put the pail down, walked backwards in front of the calf, and said what your grandfather used to say when you were small and afraid of the cellar steps. One step at a time.
You counted them out loud, and the calf started counting too, in the only way she could, by lifting each foot a little higher than the last. Mabel followed without being asked. Old Tom came last, his shadow long across the snow, and by the time all three reached the trough the sun had cleared the hedge and the ice was breaking into lace.
Ruth never said thank you, but the next morning a fresh pail of bran waited by the barn door with your name chalked on the lid. Beside it, pressed into the snow, three sets of prints ran in a line from the trough all the way to your boots.
