Matching elephant pair on wrists

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two matching outline tattoos of small elephants sit side by side on the inner wrists, each pair with trunks curled together to form a heart shape. The linework is fine and even, with simple shading only in the faces and bodies, and the ink is solid black against pale skin. The photograph is in black and white and frames both wrists evenly, centred on the tattoos.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mind the step, there, where the old lamp hook is. Sit close, because my mother swore this was true, and she never once told a story she could not sell at the chapel bazaar. It is about the Pryce twins, Edwin and Nell, and the elephant that wintered in Ashcombe.

Their father worked the Ashcombe seam and came up grey every night, so the twins waited at the top of the lane with a jam jar of cold tea for him. When the seam flooded that January and the men went without wages, Nell took work with the travelling circus pitched on the common. She mucked out the one animal they had, a grey old cow of an elephant called Bessie, who would not lift her feet for anyone over ten. Edwin carried coal for the chapel boilers at threepence a sack and came home with black in every crease.

Bessie took to Nell, and Nell to her, and by February the pair went up the lane like an old married couple, the great trunk always looped round Nell's wrist. Edwin said it was daft. Then one morning he found them asleep in the straw, the trunk curled round her hand and her hand resting on the trunk, and he sat down on the upturned bucket and could not speak for a good quarter hour, which was not a thing a Pryce boy ever did.

When the seam reopened in the spring, the twins walked to Tom Gerrard's back room above the barber's and had the same small grey elephant pricked onto the inside of each wrist, trunks curled together so they made a heart when they touched. Gerrard charged them a shilling for the pair. Every morning after that, at the pit gate, Nell pressed her wrist against her brother's, and the two of them went down the shaft with the little elephants touching, which is how the men knew to leave them be.
