Black fine line script reading I'll never walk alone with three paw prints, tattooed on the outer side of a foot near the ankle.

Script quote and paw prints on a foot

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A black script quote, I'll never walk alone, runs across the outer side of a foot and ends in a trail of three paw prints near the ankle. The linework is thin and even, and the ink is solid black with no shading. The foot rests on a white cloth against a neutral background, and the tattoo fills the right half of the frame.

The dust on the old salt road held a print the way wet sand does, so by the second morning I could read the dog's whole night in it. Wide pads where she had trotted ahead, a scuffed loop where she had doubled back to check on my boots, and a neat line beside mine that never once fell behind. Bess had belonged to a man at the filling station, who drove off towards the coast and tied her to the pump with a length of blue rope. Nobody had asked her opinion on the arrangement, and she had apparently decided it was mine.

By eleven the heat came up off the tarmac in sheets, and I stopped counting miles and started counting shade. My mother used to say a dog will walk you into the ground sooner than leave you, and I had always taken that for something people said to feel better about their pets. Bess did not care about the sun. Every time I sat on a boulder she sat too, close enough that her shoulder pressed my knee, and she waited with the patience of a clock.

On the third afternoon the signpost had been shot through, so I chose the left fork because her prints went left. Fence posts ran beside us with the wire gone, and the light turned the colour of weak tea. I started to think I had been leading her all along, until I looked back and saw the tracks properly. Her pads sat in my footprints, one after another, all the way from the pump. She had never once been ahead of me. She had simply kept to my heels, step for step, and called that company.
