Three elephants in a line on the ribs
Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
Three elephants walk in a line from left to right, with the smallest at the left and the largest at the right. The figures are shaded in black and grey with darker outlines and soft grey tones on the bodies and tusks. The tattoo sits on the side of the torso, with a grey garment pulled up beside it and a hand visible at the edge of the frame.

Dear Oru, the seed men came up the valley road this morning with their clipboards, and I told them what I tell everyone. The elephants are not for sale and they are not going into a box. They are walking to the old salt flats where the water still tastes of rain. The calf is nearly as tall as Pell's shoulder now. Nana Ith still leads, though her ears are more hole than leaf.

Three of them left the reservoir at dusk on the fourth day of the dry. Nobody walks the count properly anymore, but I count them every morning from the watch tower, left to right, the way you taught me: smallest, middle, eldest. The calf keeps to the left edge where the dust is thin. Pell walks close enough that their flanks brush at every step. When the ground goes soft they all stop together and wait, and no one has ever had to tell them to.
Last week the drone pilot from the coast asked why we bother with a line at all when the rovers could carry water. I took him up the tower and pointed. The line is the water. A herd that walks in a row finds the cracked pans and the ponds under the cracked pans, because each one remembers the footprints of the one in front. He laughed until the calf stumbled, and then he stopped laughing when both grown ones turned round at the same moment without a sound.
I am sending this with the last courier before the road floods. Keep the copy in the drawer under the ledger. If the rains come back before I see you, tell the calf's grandchildren that the line walked out and the line walked home. Your loving aunt, Mirrin.
