Three-eyed woman with leaf crown flash
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A pen-and-ink design sheet showing a woman with a third eye on her forehead, a wreath of leaves in her hair, and a ringed choker at her neck. Her clawed hands hold smoke-wreathed orbs at either side, drawn with bold outlines, fine hatching in the hair and filled black lips and brows. The composition is black and white, with the figure centred and the outlined smoke and claws framing it.

Nobody sells fortunes past the cattle grid at Corran Flats, which is why I braked so hard when the woman stepped out of the heat shimmer with a smoking glass in each hand. The road had been empty for ninety miles. The smoke rolling off the orbs was grey and slow, curling the way wet hair does as it dries, and it hung in the air a moment after she set them on my bonnet, as if it had been waiting for permission to leave.

She had a third eye set level with her brows, half-lidded and patient, and it followed the dashboard clock more closely than it followed me. Dry leaves were tangled in her hair, bronze and curled, from a tree I had never once seen out here. "Two pennies," she said, though she asked for nothing. "Choose the one that shows you what you already carry."
I chose the left, the one with the cleaner glass. Inside it the road ran on without end, my own headlights creeping along it, with no bend, no town, no sign. "Show me where it stops," I said. The leaves rustled though there was no wind. "It stops when you pour water for someone thirsty," she said. "Any stranger will do. Most drivers prefer not to find out."
I had a flask of cold tea rolling under the seat. I climbed down, unscrewed it and tipped the lot into the dust at the verge. Her hand came out of the shimmer, long fingers tipped with claws, and the sand drank the tea before it could spread. When I looked up the orb had gone clear and the smoke was gone. Ahead, a bus shelter stood in the road with one light on, and on its bench sat a man in a driver's cap, waiting for a lift.
