Woman surrounded by dripping candles design
Mixed · Flash
A pen drawing of a woman with a third eye and long hair, her head framed by a melting candle held overhead and more candles arranged around her arms and body. Bold black outlines and fine hatching define the wax and figure, while teal ink adds rose and ornamental detail on the arms, chest and thigh. The composition is centred and symmetrical, with the figure filling most of the sheet.

Dear Tom,

The chandlers in Shotton have stopped sending tallow, so Mam has been boiling down the fat from Sunday's joint and pouring it into the old tin moulds. They drip like sick things and smell worse, but they burn, and that is all the pit cares about. Mr Holroyd sent the boy round at six with a bundle for the back shift, warning that the owners would dock a man a penny for every candle he could not show at the cage.
I went up the rows with the lamp this morning, looking for you in every face that came up blackened from the hole. Nobody had seen you. Ada Pringle says the roof came down at the Low Seam on Tuesday and they are still digging for the men under it, but Mrs Dodds says that is a lie told to keep the widows quiet. I do not know which to believe, so I have lit a candle in the window every night since, the way Gran did for Da when the water came in.
Something strange happened on Thursday. I was stood at the kitchen table when the wax from the candle on the sill ran over its own edge and set in a long curl, and in the middle of the curl was a small hollow, like a knot in wood. It looked at me. I told Mam and she crossed herself and said I was overtired. Perhaps I am. But I have decided it means the light is being kept for someone, and I shall keep it burning until you come up the lane.
Your loving sister, Nell
