Three fine lines wrapped around a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a wrist with three thin, evenly spaced black lines wrapping fully around it, resembling a multi-strand bracelet. The linework is crisp and uniform, with no shading. The ink is black against pale skin, and a grey sleeve and plain wall fill the background.

Dear Ada,

You will think me soft for writing before the pay comes, but Mr Tennant has finally let the boys down the new shaft and I cannot sleep for the noise of the winding gear. Thomas came home yesterday with three lengths of black cord knotted round his left wrist. He says the overman gives one to every lad on the day he first goes below, and the cords are cut and retied each fortnight so a man can see how far he has come. I told him that was daft. He showed me the pale rings where the cord had worn into him, three neat lines, and then he laughed at my face and said it was only string.

I have pulled the chair to the window and watched the lamps come up the hill in a line, each one counted by the checkman at the top. Nobody can say who is missing until the cage stops and the names are read out. So the cords are a sort of promise, I think, that somebody has been keeping count of you.

Last night I unpicked the old cord from his wrist while he slept and tied on a new one, plaited from my green wool, and I left the three black lengths under his pillow where he will find them. Tomorrow he will ask where they went. I shall tell him the pit has them now.

Love, Nell
