Three fruit and cheese designs on cards
Dotwork · Mixed · Flash
The image shows three small paper cards on a dark wooden table, each with a hand-drawn design. The left card has a triangular slice of cheese or pizza with orange drips, and the middle and right cards show halves of avocado with black outlines. Shading is done with stippled dots, and the colours are mostly yellow and orange, with a pink stone on the middle avocado and a dark stone on the right one.

By the time the tax men reached our stall, the cheese had already started to weep. My mother pressed a thumb into the wheel and watched the orange oil bead and run down the rind as if it were looking for the gutter. "Count the drips," she told me. "Every drip is a copper the palace owes us." I counted eleven before the bell rang for noon and the guards came marching across Fenwick Square in their brass hats.

The palace had a taste for things that came from far away. Avocados arrived in the hold of the Lantern Wren, packed in damp straw, and the cooks cut them open in the courtyard with silver knives. The flesh went to the queen, who was said to like green butter on toast. The stones went to the apothecary, who ground the pink ones into a cure no physician would name and locked the dark ones in a cabinet nobody was allowed to open. I once saw the apothecary's boy trade a sack of salt for a single dark stone, and I understood then that a kingdom can be measured in the things it throws away.
So I took one. Not a pink one, which would have been missed by morning, but a dark stone the size of a plum that had rolled under the scullery drain. I wrapped it in my mother's cheesecloth and carried it home beneath a wheel of Fenwick Gold. That spring I planted it behind our cart, and by midsummer a thin green shoot had pushed up through the cobbles, stubborn as a grudge.
The queen fell ill in the autumn, and the palace sent for the cheese seller. She came down the hill in a litter, pale and wrapped in furs, and asked for toast with nothing on it but the orange drip of Fenwick Gold. She ate it slowly, the oil running down her wrist, and she did not once ask about the stone.
