Multicoloured leaf temporary tattoo sheet
Botanical · Colour · Flash
The image shows a sheet of nine rows of small, simple leaf designs arranged in three columns on a plain white background. Each leaf has a solid colour fill with a pale central vein and side veins, and the colours shift from cool mint and green through yellow and orange to red, brown and dark maroon. The leaves are evenly spaced and tilted at similar angles, giving the sheet a neat, repeating composition.

Sit down by the brazier, you, and mind the chestnut seller's cart. Nobody in Saltmarrow buys paper leaves at midnight, which is why old Mrs Quarle sold me her sheet for a shilling. Nine rows, three across, every leaf tilted the same way, as if a wind had combed them. I hung it over my bed and watched the colours go. The mint ones at the top were the first to thin, a leaf a night, like a clerk ticking off days on a calendar nobody asked for.

Each morning the sheet looked a little shabbier at the top and a little richer at the bottom, and I thought I was going mad, because the dark green leaf at the foot of the page had never once been touched. Then the maroon ones began to lift from the paper, one at a time, and I found them in the gutter outside the bakery on Fenn Street, pressed flat under the wet.
So I followed them. They led me down past the gasworks to the river steps, where Mrs Quarle was feeding the last of the yellows into the tide. She looked up, said the year had finished with the top rows and was now finishing with me, and that the dark green one was always the last to fall. I went home and found it still stuck to my wall, cold to the touch, and it has not moved since.
