Three infinity symbols with stars and swirls
Black and grey · Flash
The image shows three stacked infinity symbol designs drawn in solid black linework on a white background. The top and middle versions have curling vine-like swirls and small outlined stars trailing from one loop, while the bottom version has a single outlined star on the right loop. The designs are bold and clean, with no shading, and the composition is simple and evenly spaced.

Sit nearer the grate, the lot of you, and mind the cat, she's had her supper. Now, the gate at the bottom field. You've all walked under that iron loop a hundred times and never asked why it lies on its side like a sleeping eight. That's no eight. That's the Hollin sisters' sign, and they hung it there the winter the lane flooded and the milk cart couldn't get through.

Ada Hollin was the elder, and she was a counter. She counted sheep through the hedge gaps, she counted the stars off the top of the byre roof, and when the thaw came she counted the days until her sister Min would come back up from the village. Min had gone for the doctor. She walked the long way round, the wet way, and every time she climbed a stile Ada tied a bit of red wool on the gatepost, so Min would know the path was still hers.
Well, the wool ran out on the third night. Ada took the shears to the old wire and bent it round her hands, over and under, over and under, until it made a loop that wouldn't close and wouldn't open. Then she hung the stars on, one by one, cut from the tin sheeting on the shed roof where the frost had lifted it, and they came off easy because the cold had loosened everything. She trailed them down the curl like sparks off a whetstone. Three loops she made, the last one for Min.
And here's the thing, so mind you listen. When the lane cleared, Min came up the field following that bright curl, and she never once lost the path, because a loop has no end to lose. Ada said it would bring anyone home who followed it round. So go on, look at the gate. Trace it with your finger in the frost. Where does it finish?
Nowhere, Nan, said the youngest.
Nowhere, that's right. Now bed.
