Three mountain peaks on a collarbone
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo of three jagged mountain peaks with small dash-like strokes beneath them, suggesting ground or snow. The linework is bold and solid with simple hatched shading on the peaks. The design sits horizontally across the upper chest below the collarbone, photographed close up against a red top.

The surveyor's ledger had three columns and only two of them were ever filled in. Marit Vosk had kept it for nineteen winters in the hut above the Sallow Pass, recording the height of every peak that caught the morning sun before the valley folk were awake to see it. The third column was for the mountains that had moved overnight, and it was blank on the page the courier from Greyhollow had come to collect.

He was a thin boy with a satchel full of bread and wanted the page torn out. Marit refused him, poured him a cup of barley tea, and walked him to the window instead. Three peaks stood against the grey sky, their shoulders sharp as the nibs she used to cut. Between their feet lay the long low strokes of the snowfield, the place where the old goats wintered and the glacier had once reached the road.
"The middle one was taller last year," she said. "I wrote it down. Then I wrote it again, because I thought my hand had slipped."
The boy looked at the ledger, then at the mountains, and for the first time he did not ask for the page. He took the pen she offered, wrote a single figure in the blank column, and blotted it with his sleeve. Marit read it over his shoulder. It was lower than her own, and the snow beneath it had been drawn in carefully, as if he had already decided to come back and check.
