Small fine line tattoo of mountains and pine trees inside a thin circle, placed on the upper back near the shoulder blade.

Mountain and pine trees in a circle on the back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a row of pine trees along a horizon line, with a sketched mountain range rising behind them, all enclosed by a thin circular outline. The linework is fine and the mountains are lightly shaded in grey to show their ridges. The design is entirely black and grey, and it sits centrally on the upper back with plenty of clear skin around it.

Brother Anselm, forgive the blot on this page. The ink froze in the pot again last night and I had to warm it against my ribs like a hen with an egg. Abbot Gilbert says the copying must be finished before the thaw, when the mule路 track down from the high pass opens and the carts come up with the new parchment from Lyon. I have finished the Psalter's first gathering and nine leaves of the Gospel of John.

You asked in your last letter whether the view from the scriptorium window still shows the ridge. It does. This morning, before the bell, I stood at the glass and counted the pines along the shoulder of the valley the way you taught me to count the letters of a difficult word, one by one until the number stops shifting. Forty-one, and two more that might be shadows. Above them the mountain rises in grey plates, each ridge lit a little paler than the one before it, as though someone had rubbed the stone with the flat of a thumb. I drew it in the margin of the calendar, small, inside a ring I scratched with a compass point, because Brother Tobias asked me what the world looks like when you stop trying to fit it on a page. I told him it looks like a circle with the bottom half left empty.

Tobias laughed and pinned the sheet to the cupboard door. Gilbert saw it and did not take it down. Write to me when the passes clear, and tell me whether the pines have stayed where we left them. I will keep counting.
