Small pine tree on the inner wrist

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small, solid black silhouette of a conifer or pine tree with layered, tapering branches and a short straight trunk. The tattoo sits on the inner wrist, with the hand raised at the top of the frame. The ink is uniform black with no visible shading or colour, and the tree is centred on a pale forearm against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ines had been on the pass since the thaw, and by the third week her boots had stopped shedding grit. The survey crew called the slope above Hollin Cut the Widow's Shelf, because the last big fall had taken a shepherd's hut and two ponies in a single night. Her job was to set a peg every metre along the proposed road line and to write down whatever stood in the way.

Most of what stood in the way was rock. At the eleventh peg she found a pine, lone and narrow, growing out of a crack no wider than her hand. Its trunk was short and straight, and its branches came down in tiers like the folds of a dark cloak, each layer shorter than the one below. Nothing else grew within forty metres. She stood with the chain in one hand and felt foolish for wanting to measure it twice.

Her supervisor, Ruairi, wanted the line moved two metres east. "Clean and simple," he said, tapping the plan with his pencil. Ines pointed out that the tree had outlived three winters of avalanches that should have buried it, and that a cutting through its roots would bring the whole slope down on the first hard frost. He grunted and rolled the plan up.

That evening she drew the tree in the back of her field book, by the last light through the hut window. She did not try for detail. She laid the ink in one flat dark shape, the way the pine sat against the grey scree, and beneath it she wrote peg eleven, keep. The line moved east in the spring, and nobody ever asked her why.
