Three realistic roses in black and grey
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three open roses are stacked vertically, with the largest at the bottom and smaller blooms above, all rendered in fine tonal detail. The petals use smooth gradients, soft highlights and deep shadows to give a three-dimensional, photographic effect. The composition fills a tall, narrow area of skin against a pale, slightly blurred background.

Right, sit down, the lot of you, and mind the trifle, because this is the wedding where the roses went grey. Your great-aunt Maud was marrying a sheep farmer from over the ridge, Tomas Hale, and she had ordered three dozen white roses from the florist in Kendal. They came on the Thursday in a van with a cracked wing mirror, and the driver tipped the crates onto the cobbles and swore at the wet. Every bloom had gone the colour of old pewter. Not brown, mind, just the grey of a February sky with the sun hiding behind it.

Her mother said it was the Devil's doing. The vicar said the roses were only dressed in shadow and would come right by morning. Maud said nothing at all. She went out to the back shed, took the pruning knife from its nail, and cut three of the heaviest blooms from the crate. She set them in a jam jar of rainwater on the kitchen windowsill, lit the paraffin lamp, and sat up until the birds started, drawing every petal with a stub of charcoal on the back of a seed packet. A rose has to be looked at properly before anybody trusts it, and she had decided she would be the one to look.
At first light the three roses had opened fully. Where the lamp had touched them, the petals were deep as a well, each fold shaded so close you could have posted a letter into it, and the highlights ran along the edges like sunlight on wet slate. Tomas came in from the lambing pens, saw them, and stood a long while with his cap in his hands. Then he said a grey rose was the honest sort, the kind that did not pretend to be innocent. They married at noon with the grey roses in her hands, and nobody asked her where the colour had gone. She never told them it was in the jar, waiting for whoever would look closely enough to find it.
